Leidesdorff-Folsom estate papers, 1844-1858.

Receipts, promissory notes, leases, correspondence, power of attorney and other papers collected by William A. Leidesdorff, and later by William D. M. Howard, administrator of Leidesdorff's estate, and finally, by Joseph L. Folsom, who purchased title to the estate. Claims submitted to Leidesdorff, and paid by him or by Folsom, make up the bulk of the collection. These include bills for construction and maintenance of dwellings, storehouses and San Francisco's first school house, as well as for repairs made to vessels and for purchases of goods and services. Two leases of San Francisco properties granted by Anna Maria Spark, Leidesdorff's mother, are included. One letter from Folsom to his attorney in St. Croix, Mr. Bahneberg, discusses Spark, a Mr. Forsberg, and Thomas Butler King. A few items of Folsom's may be unrelated to Leidesdorff, being collected by Folsom in his capacity as U.S. consul. One item dates from 1858, three years after Folsom's death.
